Analyzing Central America’s largest event: Smash Legends 3

In late 2019, an El Salvador regional concluded. It had collected talent from all over Central America, with players from Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras, and Guatemala attending. Chag, at the time rising in the game, also attended, representing Mexico. Likely deemed a favorite going in, he would lose the tournament to Yei, long Costa Rica’s best player.

Nearly three years later, after a global pandemic and amidst two world tours, the Central American event returns. Once again held in San Salvador, it promises to be bigger, at 215 attendees – eclipsing the second installment’s 149.

This time, with greater attendance and more countries participating, Central America is now poised to be the next wider area – alongside Oceania, Brazil, and the Caribbean – to put up an event just one tier below a major.
